Braubach Altstadt — Obermarktstrasse & Rosengasse
Step off Rheinstrasse and the modern world evaporates. The tangle of lanes around Obermarktstrasse and Rosengasse is one of the finest concentrations of late-16th-century half-timbered architecture in Europe — slightly wonky, flower-draped, and utterly real.
A Street-by-Street Fairytale
Many of the houses lining these narrow gassen date from the 1590s and 1600s, some carrying carved inscriptions that commemorate the year of their construction. The timber frames lean at characterful angles, and window boxes overflow with geraniums in summer, giving every façade a painterly quality.
The charming Marktplatz at the heart of the old town is the natural place to pause — lined with picture-perfect half-timbered buildings, it's where locals gather for a drink, and where a popular wine festival takes over in summer and a Christmas market fills the square in December.
How to Explore It
The Altstadt is tiny enough to walk every street and alleyway in under an hour, but reward slow wanderers: look for carved dates above doorways, medieval town-wall fragments woven between houses, and the occasional courtyard garden hidden behind an arched gate.
The riverside promenade (Rheinanlagen) is just a two-minute stroll from the market square, making it easy to combine an old-town wander with a sunset sit by the water as barges glide past.
