Museum Villa Stuck
Franz von Stuck built this Bogenhausen villa in 1898 as a total work of art — studio, home and gallery fused into one dazzling whole. Today it is one of the most important preserved artists' houses in Europe, and every room feels like walking inside a painting.
A Gesamtkunstwerk You Can Walk Through
Stuck designed the building himself, blending classical architecture on the outside with a lavishly decorated Art Nouveau interior: painted friezes, gilded ceilings, dark wood panelling and mythological murals crowd every surface of the historic living quarters and studio.
The artist's enchanting garden — with its clipped hedges and antique-style sculptures — completes the picture, offering a quiet retreat that feels worlds away from the city outside the gate.
Changing Exhibitions & Permanent Collection
Beyond the preserved period rooms, the museum regularly mounts temporary exhibitions spanning 19th-century Symbolism through to contemporary art, so there is always a fresh reason to return.
Stuck's own canvases — brooding mythological scenes full of sin, seduction and Symbolist drama — hang in the rooms where they were painted, giving them an immediacy no white-cube gallery can match.
Practical Visit Tips
The museum is on Prinzregentenstraße 60, a five-minute walk east of the Friedensengel — combine both in one afternoon for a perfect Bogenhausen cultural loop.
The café inside the villa garden is a lovely spot for coffee and cake after your visit, particularly in summer when tables spill out under the trees.
