Friedensengel (Angel of Peace)
Bogenhausen's gilded crown jewel soars 38 metres above the Isar bluffs on Prinzregentenstraße, and the terrace at its feet is one of the city's finest — and least-crowded — sunset perches. Locals spread out on the steps with wine and watch Munich's rooftops turn amber while the river glitters below.
A Monument with a Story
The Friedensengel was erected to mark 25 years of peace after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71, and the golden six-metre figure atop its column represents the Greek goddess Nike — a symbol of victory, power and success.
Step inside the loggia beneath the column and look up: gold mosaics line the vaulted ceiling, depicting the goddess Demeter and other classical figures. The craftsmanship alone justifies the detour.
The View from the Terrace
From the terrace you get sweeping views down the grand Prinzregentenstraße boulevard and across the tree-lined Isar valley, with the Bavarian National Museum and Haus der Kunst visible in the distance on a clear day.
Sunset is peak hour for Münchners who gather here with friends — it is a genuinely local ritual rather than a tourist tick-box, which makes the atmosphere feel wonderfully authentic.
Getting There & What's Nearby
The monument sits right at the start of Bogenhausen on Prinzregentenstraße; from here it is only a few steps to Museum Villa Stuck, making the two natural companions on a single afternoon walk.
Tram line 16 stops virtually at the foot of the column. From the city centre, the ride takes under ten minutes.
