Bogenhausener Friedhof & Altbogenhausen Village Core

Tucked behind the grand villas, the old cemetery of St. Georg church preserves the last traces of Bogenhausen's pre-Munich village identity — and the graves of some of Germany's most beloved writers, actors and filmmakers. It is one of Munich's most quietly moving hidden gems.

A Cemetery Full of Famous Names

The Bogenhausener Friedhof, clustered around the ancient parish church of St. Georg, is the final resting place of an extraordinary roll-call of German cultural figures: author Erich Kästner, beloved actor Helmut Fischer (alias Monaco Franze), filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder, actor Walter Sedlmayr and writer Oskar Maria Graf are all buried here.

Wandering the shaded paths with a map (available at the entrance) feels less like a cemetery visit and more like a stroll through a chapter of German cultural history — each headstone a story.

The Old Village Atmosphere of Altbogenhausen

The area around St. Georg church retains a rare village-scale intimacy that stands in striking contrast to the grand boulevard architecture a few streets away. The low-rise buildings, quiet lanes and the church's modest Baroque façade make it easy to imagine the rural hamlet that existed here before Munich swallowed it in 1892.

Stroll Maria-Theresia-Straße from here to take in magnificent Jugendstil villa façades and the natural surroundings of the Maximiliansanlagen — the walk connects the old village heart to the river in about ten minutes on foot.

How to Make a Morning of It

Start at the Bogenhausener Friedhof (entrance on Bogenhausener Kirchplatz), allow 30–45 minutes to explore, then walk south-west along Maria-Theresia-Straße past the Art Nouveau villas toward the Friedensengel for a natural continuation of your Bogenhausen exploration.

The neighbourhood is entirely residential and uncommercialised — there are no souvenir shops, no tour groups and no queues. Bring your own coffee from a nearby café and enjoy the silence.
