Playa Bocagrande
Stretching for nearly two kilometres along the peninsula's western flank, Playa Bocagrande is the heartbeat of the neighbourhood — a wide, palm-backed strip where Colombian families, vendors hawking ceviche, and jet-ski riders all share the same golden sand. Come for a morning swim before the crowds build, and stay to watch the sky turn amber over the Caribbean.
A beach with decades of swagger
Bocagrande has been Cartagena's favourite escape since the 1950s, when American oil families first claimed its shores as a getaway — a legacy that gave the area its cosmopolitan, high-rise skyline visible from almost anywhere in the city.
Today the beach is gloriously public and buzzing with local life: fruit-juice carts, cumbia drifting from open-air bars, and vendors carrying trays of fresh shrimp. It is less polished than the resort islands, but far more alive.
What to do on the sand
Jet skiing and windsurfing can be arranged directly on the beach, with operators lined up along the shore — expect to pay around 60,000–80,000 COP for a 20-minute jet-ski run.
In the evening the promenade transforms into a sunset-stroll circuit for locals. Grab a cold corozo juice from a beach cart and join the parade — it costs almost nothing and feels entirely real.
