Castillogrande — Bocagrande's Exclusive Annexe
Connected to Bocagrande by a narrow neck of land, Castillogrande is a pocket-sized enclave of just sixteen seafront blocks that feels like a private club without the membership fee. Its beach is the least crowded of any in urban Cartagena, the residential streets are lined with bougainvillea-draped mansions, and the bay views across to Tierra Bomba are quietly spectacular.
A neighbourhood apart
Castillogrande began as an exclusive residential area in the mid-20th century and has never really opened up to mass tourism — which is precisely its charm. The streets are calm, the buildings are among the newest and most architecturally ambitious in the city, and the only sounds on the beach are waves and the distant hum of boat engines crossing the bay.
Three of Cartagena's most storied private clubs — Club Unión, Club Naval and Club Cartagena — are based here, lending the area an understated elegance that contrasts sharply with the bustle of the main Bocagrande strip just minutes away.
The beach and the bay path
Castillogrande's beach is wide, the waters are calm and well-suited to families with young children, and street vendors are refreshingly unobtrusive. Because there are no large hotels fronting the sand, it never gets the weekend crush that Playa Bocagrande does.
On the inner bay side, a waterfront path offers a sweeping view across the Bahía de Cartagena — one of the finest free vantage points in the whole city, especially at golden hour when the walled city glows in the distance.
