Oltrarno Artisan Quarter
Cross the Ponte Vecchio and within two blocks the tourist density drops by half. The Oltrarno — Florence's left bank — is a neighbourhood of working goldsmiths, picture restorers, bookbinders, and leather craftspeople who have occupied the same workshops for generations. Walking its narrow streets is the closest you can get to understanding how this city actually lives.
The Craft Workshops of Via Toscanella and Sdrucciolo de' Pitti
Via Toscanella and the tiny alley of Sdrucciolo de' Pitti are lined with botteghe — small workshops — where you can watch artisans at work through open doors. Atelier Signum at Via Toscanella 19 has been hand-marbling paper using 16th-century techniques for over 40 years; a single sheet costs €4 and makes a far better souvenir than anything sold near the Duomo. Across the street, a frame-gilder hammers gold leaf onto carved wood in a workshop that smells of rabbit-skin glue and linseed oil.
The area around Piazza de' Rossi and Borgo San Jacopo concentrates goldsmiths and silversmiths who sell directly from their studios at prices well below the jewellery shops on Ponte Vecchio. Many will make bespoke pieces in 24–48 hours.
Eating and Drinking Like a Local
For lunch, join the queue at Buca dell'Orafo on Vicolo dell'Oro for a lampredotto sandwich — the Florentine street food of slow-cooked tripe stomach, dressed with salsa verde and chilli, served in a crusty roll. It sounds confronting and tastes extraordinary. The Oltrarno is also home to Il Santino, the wine bar annex of the celebrated Il Santo Bevitore restaurant on Via di Santo Spirito, where a glass of natural Vermentino and a plate of lardo on warm bread costs about €12.
As the evening begins, the aperitivo culture here is centred on Piazza Santo Spirito and the bars of Via dei Serragli. Volume Café at Piazza Santo Spirito 5 serves its Negroni with a small plate of snacks and a shelf of art books to browse — a combination that perfectly captures the Oltrarno's particular character.
