San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
A hermitage perched on a wave-lashed islet connected to the Basque coast by a handmade stone causeway of 241 steps, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is one of the most photographed spots in all of Spain. Ring the bell at the top three times and, according to local legend, your wish will be granted.
The Climb & the View
The zigzagging staircase clings to a rocky spine above crashing Atlantic waves, rewarding every breathless pause with a wider panorama of cliffs, sea stacks and the open Bay of Biscay.
At the summit the tiny 10th-century hermitage of San Juan Bautista feels almost impossibly placed — whitewashed walls against a sky that shifts from silver to cobalt depending on the season.
Getting There & Timing
The islet sits about 5 km west of Bermeo along the BI-3101 coastal road; a free car park at Gaztelugatxe hamlet feeds into a short forest path before the causeway begins.
Arrive before 9 am or after 6 pm in summer to beat tour-bus crowds and catch the golden-hour light that turns the stone steps amber. Weekday mornings in May or September are the sweet spot.
Practical Notes
A free reservation system (Basque Government website) operates in peak season — book your time slot at least a day ahead to guarantee entry to the causeway.
Wear grippy shoes; the steps are uneven and can be slippery after rain, and there is no handrail for long stretches of the descent.
