Museo del Pescador (Fishermen's Museum)

Housed inside the 15th-century tower of Ercilla on the old port, the Museo del Pescador tells the story of Bermeo's fishing culture with an intimacy and specificity that no general maritime museum can match. Scale models of traditional Basque traineras, original navigation instruments and oral-history recordings from retired fishermen make this a genuinely moving experience.

The Collection

The museum traces Bermeo's fishing history from the medieval whale-hunting expeditions to Newfoundland — Basque whalers reached the Grand Banks decades before Columbus — through the industrial anchovy canning boom of the 19th century to the modern fleet.

Highlight objects include a fully rigged 1:10 scale model of a traditional Basque bou trawler, a collection of hand-carved net floats and a haunting room dedicated to fishermen lost at sea, with handwritten memorial plaques donated by families.

The Tower & Architecture

The Torre de Ercilla is one of the few surviving medieval defensive towers in the Basque fishing ports, and the building itself is worth the visit — thick stone walls, narrow windows and a rooftop terrace with a direct view over the harbour and the church of Santa Eufemia.

Temporary exhibitions on the ground floor frequently feature contemporary Basque artists responding to maritime themes, giving the museum a living, community-connected feel.

Visiting Practicalities

The museum is small enough to do thoroughly in 90 minutes; the English-language audio guide is well-written and adds significant depth to the exhibits.

Combine the visit with a walk along the old port wall (the muralla) that extends from the museum toward the lighthouse pier — the stonework dates to the 16th century.
