Bermeo Fish Auction (Lonja de Bermeo)

Bermeo's working fishing port hosts one of the Basque Country's most authentic fish auctions, where the day's catch — anchovy, bonito, hake and the prized bluefin tuna — is sold by electronic bidding before most tourists have finished breakfast. It is a raw, vivid window into the maritime soul of the town.

How the Auction Works

Buyers from canneries, restaurants and wholesalers gather at the lonja (fish market hall) as boats unload. Fish are graded, weighed and displayed on stainless-steel pallets before an electronic Dutch-auction board ticks prices down until a buyer bids.

The whole process is fast, loud and wonderfully chaotic — rubber-booted fishermen, ice-shovelling workers and sharp-eyed buyers all operating in a choreography refined over generations.

Visiting as a Traveller

Public access to watch the auction is possible on weekday mornings (typically 8–10 am) when boats are in; ask at the Bermeo tourist office on Plaza Askatasuna for the current schedule, as it varies with the fishing calendar.

Even if the auction floor is closed, the outer quay at dawn is spectacular: colourful trawlers unloading crates, the smell of salt and diesel, and fishermen mending nets in the early light.

Buying Fresh Catch

A small retail fish stall adjacent to the lonja sells directly to the public from around 9 am — buy a fillet of fresh hake or a bag of anchovies and ask your accommodation to cook it, or take it to a local sidrería that offers the popular 'cocina tu pescado' arrangement.

The anchovy season (April–June) is the most exciting time: the Bay of Biscay anchovies landed here are the raw ingredient for the world-famous Cantabrian anchovies in oil.
