Rossfeld Panoramastraße
Most visitors queue for the Eagle's Nest — the savvier ones drive the Rossfeld Panoramastraße, Germany's highest panoramic toll road, and enjoy almost exactly the same sky-scraping views without the crowds. At 1,600 metres above sea level, the Alps, the Dachstein Massif, and the city of Salzburg all spread out below you at once.
The Drive Itself Is the Attraction
The 15.4-kilometre loop road winds through hairpin turns above the treeline, offering unobstructed views of the Berchtesgaden Alps, the Dachstein Massif, and the Salzkammergut at almost every bend — with multiple pull-offs where you can step out and simply stare.
From the highest point near Ahornbüchsenkopf at 1,604 metres, you can look straight down more than 1,000 metres into the Salzach Valley, with the rooftops of Mozart's Salzburg visible on a clear day.
More Than Just a Drive
The road is equally popular with cyclists, motorcyclists, and hikers — the southern access road near Klaushöhe on the Obersalzberg is also the starting point for the hike up to the Eagle's Nest, so you can combine both in one outing.
Several viewpoint car parks along the loop have benches and picnic spots; the Enzianbrennerei Grassl distillery hut sits just below the Eckersattel pass, making it a natural stop for a glass of gentian schnapps before the descent.
When to Go
Late May through October is the sweet spot — snow can block the road in winter, but the reward in summer is alpine meadows in full bloom flanking the tarmac on both sides.
Photographers should aim for early morning when low light rakes across the peaks and valley mist still clings to the Salzach far below.
