Marktplatz Friday Farmers' Market

Every Friday morning Berchtesgaden's handsome Marktplatz transforms into one of the most authentic weekly markets in the Bavarian Alps — no tourist tat, just local farmers, smoky fish stalls, and bakers pulling trays of Bauernkrapfen from wood-fired ovens. Come hungry.

What You'll Find on the Stalls

From 8 am until noon, the square fills with stalls selling fresh cheeses, regional meats, smoked fish products, farm eggs, seasonal fruit and vegetables, and handmade crafts — the kind of spread that reminds you Bavaria's larder is genuinely extraordinary.

Don't leave without trying a Bauernkrapfen (a deep-fried Bavarian pastry), a wedge of local mountain cheese, or a paper cone of Steckerlfisch — whole fish grilled on a stick over an open flame, a regional street-food classic.

The Square Itself Is Worth a Wander

The Marktplatz is anchored by a lion-column fountain originally constructed in 1558, with the lion column added in 1628, and ringed by buildings covered in Lüftlmalerei — the elaborate painted murals that are Bavaria's answer to public art.

The Hirschenhaus (Deer House) on the square's edge bears what is considered the oldest Lüftlmalerei mural in Bavaria, painted in 1610; the Café Forester next door has been serving coffee and exceptional tortes since 1873.

After the Market

Once the stalls pack up, duck into the pedestrian zone behind the square for a browse through traditional costume shops (Trachten) selling dirndls and Lederhosen — the real, locally-made kind rather than airport souvenirs.

The Kurgarten, a small sculptural garden tucked behind the tourist office, is a quiet spot to sit with a market pastry and watch the town return to its unhurried Alpine rhythm.
