Kneifelspitze Hike via Maria Gern Church
While the crowds pile onto the Jennerbahn cable car, a quiet trail from the gorgeous baroque Maria Gern Church winds up through pine forest and alpine meadow to the Kneifelspitze summit — a panoramic perch above the whole Berchtesgaden basin that most visitors never find.
Start at Maria Gern: Bavaria's Most Photogenic Church
The Maria Gern pilgrimage church is a stunning white-and-gold baroque building set on a gentle hill north of Berchtesgaden town, with the serrated Watzmann massif rising dramatically behind it — one of the most photographed compositions in the entire region.
Bus #837 from Berchtesgaden drops you right at the church, making this a car-free adventure from the first step. Spend a few minutes inside the candlelit interior before lacing up your boots.
The Trail to Kneifelspitze
The most popular route is a 7.5 km round trip (3–4 hours, moderate difficulty) that climbs steadily through dense forest before the trees fall away to open alpine meadows as you approach the summit.
The path is well-marked and manageable for anyone with a moderate level of fitness, though the upper section has a meaningful elevation gain — the reward is a 360-degree panorama taking in the Watzmann, the Maria Gern church far below, and on clear days the distant Salzburger Alps.
Paulshütte: The Summit Hut
At the top sits the Paulshütte, a small mountain hut where you can rest with a cold Radler or a bowl of Gulaschsuppe while the Alps arrange themselves around you — the kind of moment that makes you want to cancel your flight home.
The hike can equally be started from the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine car park for a slightly longer loop that passes the secondary viewpoint at Marxenhöhe before reaching the summit.
