Marché du Samedi — Place Jeanne-Hachette
Every Saturday morning, Place Jeanne-Hachette fills with the colours and smells of northern France's finest market garden. Local farmers drive in from the Picardy plain with leeks as thick as your wrist, creamy Neufchâtel hearts and jars of amber honey.
What to buy and where to look
The covered section nearest the town hall is the place for charcuterie — look for andouillette de Picardie and rough-cut pâté en croûte sold by the slice. Cheese stalls stock the AOC Neufchâtel, a Norman heart-shaped soft cheese with a mushroomy rind that pairs brilliantly with a baguette bought three stalls along.
Seasonal vegetables dominate the open-air section: white asparagus in May, strawberries from Warluis in June, and fat ceps from the Forêt de Hez in autumn. Prices are noticeably lower than Paris equivalents and the vendors are happy to talk terroir.
Eating and lingering
Several rôtisserie vans park along the square's eastern edge, their rotisserie chickens basting in their own juices from 08:00. Buy a half-chicken with roasted potatoes scooped from the dripping tray — it's the definitive Beauvais market lunch.
The cafés ringing the square open early; grab a table at Café de la Mairie for a crème and people-watching as stallholders banter with regulars. The market winds down by 13:00, so arrive before 10:00 for the best choice.
