Forêt Domaniale de Hez-Froidmont
Less than 10 kilometres south of Beauvais, the Forêt de Hez-Froidmont covers 1,300 hectares of ancient beech, oak and hornbeam that the French state has managed since the 16th century. It is one of the most accessible and least-touristed forests in the Hauts-de-France region, and in autumn it is simply magnificent.
Walking and Cycling the Forest Trails
A network of clearly waymarked GR trails and forest roads criss-crosses the woods, ranging from a gentle 5 km loop to a full 18 km circuit that takes in the highest ridgeline views over the Oise valley. The sentier des Étangs (pond trail) is the most popular short route, passing two reflective forest ponds that are stunning in morning mist.
Mountain bikers use the wider forest roads year-round, and the terrain is gentle enough for families with children on hybrid bikes. Bike hire is available in Beauvais at Vélo Oise, a municipal scheme with stations near the train station.
Wildlife and Seasonal Highlights
The forest is home to roe deer, red squirrels and a thriving population of great spotted woodpeckers. Birdwatchers should walk the eastern edge near the hamlet of Froidmont in early morning between April and June for the best chance of hearing tawny owls and common nightingales.
Autumn (mid-October to early November) is the peak season: the beeches turn a deep copper-gold and the forest floor is carpeted in leaves. Spring bluebells (late April) run a close second for sheer visual impact.
