Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Beauvais
Standing inside Saint-Pierre is like looking up into a frozen stone rocket: at 48.5 metres, its choir vault is the tallest Gothic vault ever completed, a record it has held since 1272. The cathedral was never finished, which makes it even more extraordinary — a fragment of architectural ambition frozen mid-flight.
A Record That Defies Gravity
The choir and transept are all that were built, yet they dwarf most complete cathedrals in Europe. Engineers still debate how the medieval builders pushed masonry this high, and the forest of flying buttresses outside tells the story of a structure constantly fighting its own daring.
Step into the transept on a sunny morning and the rose windows throw pools of ruby and cobalt light across the stone floor. Come between 10 am and noon for the best natural light through the south rose.
The Astronomical Clock & Tapestries
Inside, a monumental 19th-century astronomical clock fills an entire bay with 52 dials and 68 automata — it chimes on the hour and draws a small crowd every time. The clock was built by Auguste-Lucien Vérité between 1865 and 1868 and is considered one of the most complex mechanical clocks ever made.
The cathedral also houses a remarkable collection of medieval tapestries, including the 15th-century Arbre de Jessé, displayed in the ambulatory. These are often overlooked by visitors rushing to photograph the vault — don't make that mistake.
