Montagne de Beaune — Bouze-lès-Beaune Panorama
Drive or cycle ten minutes west of Beaune into the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune hills and the city's medieval skyline suddenly appears framed by an ocean of vines — one of the most photogenic and least-visited viewpoints in all of Burgundy.
The View from the Hautes-Côtes
The D970 road climbing from Beaune towards Bouze-lès-Beaune and Mavilly-Mandelot opens up sweeping panoramas across the entire Côte de Beaune. On a clear day you can see the patchwork of grand cru and premier cru vineyards stretching from Pommard in the south to Savigny-lès-Beaune in the north, with Beaune's Hôtel-Dieu roof glinting in the middle distance.
The best spot is the small lay-by just above the hamlet of Bouze-lès-Beaune, where a stone bench faces east over the valley. Sunrise here in September, when the vines turn gold and amber, is genuinely breathtaking — bring a thermos.
Walking the Vineyard Ridge
A marked GR hiking trail connects Beaune's old town to Bouze-lès-Beaune in about 90 minutes on foot, passing through working vineyard parcels where you can read the appellation signs on the posts and understand exactly how Burgundy's classification system maps onto the landscape.
In harvest season (mid-September to early October) the trails buzz with pickers and tractors. Winemakers are generally welcoming to respectful walkers, and some domaines leave a barrel and a ladle of new juice out for passers-by — a tradition called the 'pièce du vendangeur'.
Sunset & the Golden Hour
The Hautes-Côtes hills face east, making them ideal for morning light on the vineyards below. For a sunset viewpoint, continue on the D970 to the ridge above Nantoux village, where the land drops away westward into a quieter, wilder valley of oak forest and limestone outcrops.
The village of Bouze-lès-Beaune itself has a simple auberge serving regional lunches — a perfect reward after the ridge walk before the descent back into Beaune.
