Tucked into a stone-walled room on the Rue Monge, Le Bistrot Bourguignon is the kind of neighbourhood wine bar that Beaune does better than anywhere else — a long list of small-domaine Burgundies by the glass, honest regional cooking and an atmosphere that feels entirely local even in peak tourist season.
The Wine List That Educates
The chalk board behind the zinc bar lists 20–30 wines by the glass each day, rotating through appellations from Marsannay in the north to Santenay in the south. The staff explain each wine without condescension, making this an ideal first stop for anyone trying to decode Burgundy's bewildering village hierarchy.
Prices are fair by Beaune standards: a glass of village-level Volnay or Savigny-lès-Beaune typically costs €6–9, while a half-bottle of a premier cru from a respected domaine sits around €30–40 — considerably less than you would pay in Paris or London.
What to Order
The kitchen produces classic Burgundian small plates: oeufs en meurette (poached eggs in a rich red-wine sauce with lardons and croutons), gougères still warm from the oven, and a jambon persillé that arrives in a generous terrine slice with cornichons and Dijon mustard.
For a main course the boeuf bourguignon is slow-cooked to the point where the beef yields to a spoon — served with fresh egg pasta rather than the usual boiled potato, which elevates it considerably. Finish with a slice of pain d'épices ice cream.
When & How to Visit
The bistrot fills quickly on Friday and Saturday evenings; book a table at least two days ahead in summer. Lunchtime is more relaxed and the plat du jour (typically €14–16) represents exceptional value for the quality.
The Rue Monge itself is one of Beaune's most characterful streets, lined with wine merchants, a fromagerie and a chocolatier — build a slow afternoon around it before dinner.
