Marché de Beaune — Place Carnot Saturday Market
Every Saturday morning, Beaune's central Place Carnot and surrounding streets transform into one of Burgundy's liveliest weekly markets, where local producers spread out Époisses cheese, jambon persillé, fresh walnuts and bottles of Côte de Beaune wine alongside seasonal vegetables from the Saône plain.
What to Buy & Who to Meet
The market draws producers from across the Côte d'Or: look for the fromager who wheels in a wheel of Époisses still oozing under its orange rind, and the charcutier selling house-made andouillette and rosette de Lyon. A handful of stalls are dedicated entirely to Dijon mustard in every grain and flavour imaginable.
Wine merchants set up tasting tables along the Rue Maufoux end of the market, pouring village-level Burgundies at approachable prices. This is a genuine opportunity to buy direct from a small domaine at cellar-door cost without driving the Routes des Grands Crus.
Cheese, Bread & the Art of the Picnic
The boulangerie stalls produce pain de campagne and fougasse studded with lardons — perfect picnic foundations. Pair them with a wedge of Comté aged 18 months from the affineur near the central fountain and a jar of local honey from a Hautes-Côtes beekeeper.
By 10:00 the market is buzzing with locals and visitors alike. Grab a crêpe from the travelling crêpier on the corner and eat it standing — it is one of those unrepeatable, utterly Burgundian moments.
Practical Tips for Market Morning
The market runs from roughly 07:30 to 13:00 every Saturday year-round, with a smaller version on Wednesday mornings. The Saturday edition is significantly larger and includes clothing and household goods stalls on the outer ring, while the food producers cluster closest to the Hôtel-Dieu.
Bring a canvas bag and cash — many smaller producers do not accept cards. The best produce (especially mushrooms in autumn and strawberries in June) sells out by 10:30, so early risers are rewarded.
