Scape Park at Cap Cana
Scape Park is a 1,500-acre ecological reserve carved into the limestone karst landscape just south of Bávaro, and it packs more natural drama per square kilometre than anywhere else on this coast. Ancient cenotes, a sea cave accessible only by swimming and a soaring zip-line circuit make it the region's most exhilarating day out.
The Cenotes and Caves
Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park — now incorporated into Scape Park — protects a chain of 12 freshwater cenotes connected by jungle trails. The cenotes range from shallow, sunlit pools perfect for a cool dip to deep, cathedral-like caverns where stalactites hang above mirror-still water. Swimming is permitted in designated pools; the water is strikingly clear and a constant 24 °C year-round.
Cueva Fun Fun is the park's showstopper: a vast limestone cave reached by rappelling 12 metres down a rope through the jungle canopy, then wading waist-deep through an underground river by headlamp. The cave ceiling opens in places to shafts of light that illuminate ancient Taíno pictographs — some of the best-preserved pre-Columbian rock art in the Caribbean.
Above the Canopy
The zip-line circuit runs through mature tropical forest, with the longest run stretching 400 metres over a jungle valley. Guides are bilingual, safety standards are high (helmets, full harnesses, double-clip systems) and the views from the platforms over the canopy toward the coast are genuinely breathtaking.
After the adrenaline, the park's Taíno Village recreation area offers a quieter look at indigenous culture — replica bohío huts, cassava bread demonstrations and displays of pre-Columbian tools found in the surrounding caves.
