Playa Bávaro

Stretching for nearly 30 kilometres along the northeastern coast of Punta Cana, Playa Bávaro consistently ranks among the Caribbean's finest beaches. Powdery white coral sand, impossibly turquoise water and swaying coconut palms make every hour here feel like a postcard come to life.

The Beach Itself

The sand along Playa Bávaro is famously soft underfoot — it stays cool even in midday heat because it's composed largely of crushed coral rather than quartz. Walk south from the main resort strip and the crowds thin quickly, rewarding you with long, quiet stretches where the only sound is the Atlantic surf.

The water is sheltered by a natural reef that keeps waves gentle and visibility high, making it ideal for snorkelling directly from shore. Look for sergeant-major fish and the occasional spotted eagle ray gliding past the coral heads just 50 metres out.

Beyond the Sunlounger

Watersports operators set up along the beach daily, offering kitesurfing lessons, parasailing, catamaran day trips and paddleboard rentals at negotiable prices. Macao Beach, a 20-minute drive north, is the wilder, reef-free stretch where serious surfers head when Atlantic swells pick up between November and March.

At dusk, local vendors appear with fresh coconuts, cold Presidente beer and grilled corn. Staying for sunset is non-negotiable — the sky turns amber and rose over the palm canopy in a way that no filter can improve.
