Laguna Bavaro Kayak & Mangrove Tour
Most visitors never venture beyond the beach, which means the brackish lagoon directly behind the Bávaro hotel strip — fringed with dense red mangrove forest and alive with herons, frigatebirds and juvenile reef fish — remains almost entirely to yourself. A guided kayak tour through this ecosystem is one of the most serene and surprising experiences on the entire coast.
Into the Mangroves
Local operators launch single and tandem kayaks from a small dock near the Cortecito beach access point. The route winds through narrow channels where mangrove roots arch overhead, filtering the light into green-gold cathedral patterns on the water. Guides identify the birds overhead — magnificent frigatebirds, reddish egrets, belted kingfishers — and explain how the mangrove root system acts as the nursery for the reef fish you see snorkelling offshore.
The lagoon connects to a broader wetland system that extends toward Punta Cana airport. In the quieter interior channels, it is genuinely possible to drift in complete silence for minutes at a time — a remarkable contrast to the resort energy just 500 metres away.
Practical Details and Best Timing
Tours typically run 90 minutes to two hours and cover three to four kilometres of paddling. No prior kayaking experience is required — the lagoon is calm and the channels are wide enough for beginners. Guides carry binoculars and a waterproof species identification card for the birds.
Early morning (7–9 am) is by far the best time: light is golden, birds are most active and the heat is manageable. By 11 am the mangrove channels become noticeably warmer and the bird activity drops off significantly. Book the night before through your hotel activities desk or directly with Cortecito-based operators.
