Monte Igueldo, San Sebastián

A century-old funicular hauls you up 181 metres above San Sebastián to a viewpoint that frames the perfect crescent of La Concha beach, the wooded islands of Santa Clara, and the green Basque hills rolling away to the horizon. It is the single best vantage point in the entire region — and it takes only ten minutes to reach.

The Ride Up and the View

The wooden funicular has been running since 1912 and feels charmingly unchanged — steep, slightly rattling and completely delightful. The summit opens onto a broad terrace where the full sweep of La Concha bay unfolds below you, a view that has appeared on more postcards than any other in the Basque Country.

At the top, the old amusement park — a wonderfully retro collection of rides including a 1928 roller coaster — adds a surreal, nostalgic layer to the experience. It is genuinely unlike any other viewpoint in Spain.

Best Times for the View

Arrive for the last funicular of the day (check seasonal timetables, usually around 21:00 in summer) to watch the sun drop behind the headland and the bay turn copper and violet. Bring a light layer — the breeze at the summit is always several degrees cooler than the beach.

Early morning visits on weekdays are almost crowd-free. The clarity of light before 10:00 makes for the sharpest photographs, with the bay glittering and the Cantabrian Sea stretching to the horizon.

Combining with a Walk

A well-marked footpath descends from Monte Igueldo through pine and eucalyptus forest to the Ondarreta beach in about 40 minutes — a lovely one-way hike that means you can take the funicular up and walk down without retracing your steps.

At the base, Eduardo Chillida's monumental sculpture El Peine del Viento (The Comb of the Wind) is embedded in the rocks at the water's edge, a five-minute stroll from the Ondarreta footpath exit.
