Playa del Varadero
While Playa Blanca draws the crowds, Playa del Varadero curves along the peninsula's calmer inner side, facing the Ciénaga rather than the open sea. The water is glassy, the palms lean at cinematic angles and on a weekday you may have the whole stretch almost entirely to yourself.
A Different Kind of Beach Day
The protected position means there's virtually no wave action, making Varadero ideal for snorkelling in the seagrass beds just offshore where you'll spot starfish, sea cucumbers and the occasional seahorse. The water clarity here rivals Playa Blanca but without the boat traffic.
A small cluster of local families run simple chiringuito-style food stands under the palms, serving fried fish, patacones and cold Águila beer. The vibe is entirely unhurried — a hammock, a cold drink and a paperback is the standard itinerary.
Finding It
Varadero sits on the western, lagoon-facing side of the peninsula, roughly a 20-minute walk or 5-minute mototaxi ride from the Barú village centre. There are no formal signs; ask any local for 'la playa del otro lado' and they'll point you in the right direction.
The beach is accessible only by land (from within the peninsula) or by private boat, which is precisely why it stays quiet. Mototaxis from the main road charge around COP 5,000–8,000 per person.
Best Time to Visit
Weekday mornings between December and April offer the best combination of calm water, low wind and thin crowds. The flat light of late afternoon turns the lagoon a burnished gold that photographers love.
Avoid visiting after heavy rainfall as runoff from the village can temporarily cloud the water closest to shore.
