Bariloche Artisan Market (Feria Artesanal del Centro Cívico)
Just behind the landmark Centro Cívico clock tower, this open-air market is where Bariloche's creative community — and its Mapuche artisan tradition — spills out into the Patagonian sunshine. Silver jewellery, hand-carved wood, woven wool, and regional food make it the city's most authentic shopping stop.
What You'll Find
Stalls here sell a genuinely varied range of handmade goods: delicate silver jewellery, sturdy hand-carved wooden kitchenware that carries the scent of the surrounding lenga beech forests, woollen ponchos, and ceramics influenced by Mapuche indigenous design. Prices are fair and the stallholders are unhurried — this is not a tourist trap hustle.
Regional food products are equally worth your attention: look for Argentine wine, smoked Patagonian trout pâté, and wild-herb jams that you won't find in any supermarket. The indoor Mercado Artesanal on Calle Moreno (between Villegas and Quaglia) is the covered complement, open daily and useful on rainy Patagonian afternoons.
When to Go
The outdoor market behind the Centro Cívico runs on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from noon to 8 pm, while the waterfront market between the square and the lake operates on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with food, jewellery, and local crafts. The indoor market on Moreno is open daily from 11 am to 8 pm — handy if the famous Patagonian wind picks up.
Come with cash (Argentine pesos), a reusable bag, and time to browse without rushing. The market sits steps from Lago Nahuel Huapi, so a post-shopping walk along the lakeshore is the natural way to end the afternoon.
