Museo dell'Olio d'Oliva, Cisano
Two kilometres south of Bardolino in the hamlet of Cisano, this free, wonderfully laid-out museum tells the full story of Lake Garda's other great liquid treasure — its PDO-certified extra-virgin olive oil. The centrepiece exhibits are enormous antique presses, some once powered by mules, that make you feel the sheer physical labour behind every bottle.
What the Museum Contains
The most impressive exhibits are the monster olive presses, some of which used mule power to drive them — a visceral reminder of how labour-intensive traditional oil production was. Other displays chart the history of olive oil production around Lake Garda and explain how the crop is harvested today using modern methods.
There is also an olive-oil library and a fascinating exhibition of glassware historically used to serve and store oil — a surprisingly beautiful collection that reveals how central olive oil was to Garda table culture for centuries. Audio guides are available in English and Dutch, making the content fully accessible to international visitors.
The Shop and How to Get There
The shop upstairs sells everything from olive-wood chopping boards to olive-based cosmetics, as well as bottles of Garda DOP extra-virgin olive oil at prices that undercut most supermarkets. It is the ideal place to stock up on a genuinely local, genuinely excellent edible souvenir.
The museum is about a 30-minute walk south from Bardolino centre along the flat lakeside path, or a very short drive. You can also combine it with the Museo del Vino at Cantina Zeni on the same route, making for a full half-day of sensory Bardolino culture.
