Layan Beach — The Wild Northern Cove

Walk or drive ten minutes north of Bang Tao's last beach bar and the luxury resorts disappear entirely — Layan Beach is a secluded 2.5-kilometre arc enclosed by lush green hills and tall casuarina trees, where the only soundtrack is the Andaman Sea.

A Beach That Time Forgot

Layan Beach is a secluded and serene beach located on the west coast of Phuket, close to Bang Tao Beach. Around 2.5 kilometres long, it is known for its soft white sand and crystal-clear waters during high season, and it is far less crowded and quieter than almost any other beach on the island.

The beach is surrounded by lush green hills and lined with tall casuarina trees that provide natural shade — a welcome luxury on a hot Phuket afternoon when the midday sun is relentless on the open sand.

Getting Here & What to Expect

The northernmost curve of Bang Tao Beach merges naturally with Layan — you can walk the full length of Bang Tao at low tide and simply keep going, or arrive directly by scooter or Grab. There are no resort facilities, no sunbed rentals, and no beach vendors: just sand, trees, and sea.

Smigo's Bar and Restaurant — a small bamboo beach bar at the very north end of Bang Tao, just before the headland that marks the start of Layan — is the last outpost of civilisation. The venue opened in 2022 and combines a thatched bar, low tables under coloured umbrellas, and a long line of beanbags facing the sea, with a fire show after sunset on most nights.

When to Visit

High season (November to April) brings calm, clear water perfect for paddling and long swims. The northwest-facing position means this stretch of coast catches the sun setting directly into the Andaman Sea — arrive by 5:30 pm in high season and you will have one of Phuket's finest sunset views almost entirely to yourself.

During low season (May to October), light surf rolls in and the north end becomes a quiet surfer's spot — nothing dramatic, but enough to make it worth bringing a board if you have one.
