Surprise Corner & the Hoodoos Viewpoint

Perched on a cliff bend of Tunnel Mountain Drive, Surprise Corner delivers a heart-stopping free view of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel framed by the Bow River valley and the peaks of Mount Rundle — and the nearby Hoodoos viewpoint adds bizarre sandstone pillars to the mix, all without a ticket or a gondola ride.

Two Viewpoints, One Short Drive

Surprise Corner is a small pullout on Tunnel Mountain Drive where the valley suddenly opens to reveal the full castle-like silhouette of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel against the mountains — a composition that stops every car in its tracks. It is one of the most photographed non-lake scenes in Banff and costs absolutely nothing.

Continue a few minutes further along the same road to the Hoodoos viewpoint, where paved, accessible trails wind past tall columns of glacial till capped by harder rock — the Stoney people called Tunnel Mountain the 'Sleeping Buffalo', and from here you can see exactly why. Unobstructed views stretch east down the Bow Valley toward Canmore and Pigeon Mountain.

Best Time to Visit & the Trail Connection

Both viewpoints face southwest, making them excellent for late-afternoon and golden-hour light when the Fairmont glows honey-coloured and the valley fills with warm shadow. The Hoodoos parking area is large, paved, and equipped with toilets — rare luxuries for a free Banff viewpoint.

Adventurous walkers can link the two spots on foot via the Surprise Corner to Hoodoos Trail, a 9.6-kilometre out-and-back that hugs the Bow River and climbs through forest above the valley — one of the best accessible hikes directly from Banff townsite.
