Moraine Lake Rockpile Trail
Climb a boulder-built staircase for barely 10 minutes and you are rewarded with what many photographers consider the single greatest panorama in the Canadian Rockies — Moraine Lake's electric turquoise water backed by the jagged wall of the Valley of the Ten Peaks. No filter needed, no exaggeration required.
The View That Launched a Thousand Postcards
The Rockpile Trail is just 0.8 km return with only 12 metres of elevation gain, yet the payoff is completely disproportionate to the effort. From the summit of the rockpile, the bright turquoise water of Moraine Lake fills the foreground while ten distinct Rocky Mountain peaks form a serrated skyline behind it — a composition so perfect it once graced the Canadian $20 bill.
Morning light is everything here. The soft golden hour glow hits the Ten Peaks first and reflects across the still water before the crowds arrive, turning the lake from teal to an almost unreal cyan. Aim to be at the viewpoint by 7 a.m. for the best colour and the fewest elbows in your shot.
Getting There & Making the Most of It
Private vehicles are banned from Moraine Lake Road from June 1 to mid-October, so you must arrive by Parks Canada shuttle, Roam Transit, guided tour, or bicycle. Book shuttle tickets well in advance — the 40% released in spring sell out fast, with the remaining 60% dropping 48 hours before departure.
Once at the lake, pair the Rockpile with the flat lakeshore trail along the right-hand shore for views of Mount Fay and the Fay Glacier, and consider renting a canoe from the Moraine Lake Lodge dock to see the whole scene from water level.
