Castella de Aguada (Bandra Fort)

Perched at Land's End above the Arabian Sea, this ruined Portuguese watchtower is Bandra's most dramatic vantage point — crumbling granite arches framing the glittering cable-stays of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Come at golden hour and you'll understand why film crews never leave.

Four Centuries of History in One Ruin

Built by the Portuguese in 1640 as a watchtower overlooking Mahim Bay, the fort also served as a freshwater resupply point for passing ships — 'aguada' literally means 'water point' in Portuguese, explaining its full name Castella de Aguada.

The fort passed through Portuguese, Maratha and British hands; the English deliberately left it in partial ruin to deny it strategic value. Those very ruins, with their granite walls and arched pillars, are what make the place so photogenic today.

A 2003 conservation programme by the Bandra Bandstand Residents' Trust rescued the structure from total decay, and it has since appeared in Bollywood films including the iconic Dil Chahta Hai.

What to See & Do On Site

The fort spreads across several levels, rising 24 metres above sea level, so climb to the uppermost terrace for a panoramic sweep that takes in the Sea Link, the open Arabian Sea and the Mumbai skyline simultaneously.

On Sunday afternoons an informal jam session called 'Artisan's Court' fills the fort's small amphitheatre with live music — check local listings before you visit as timings shift seasonally.

The short walk along the coastal path from the fort towards Joggers Park is one of Bandra's quietest and most rewarding strolls, with the sea crashing on basalt rocks below.
