Bai Thom Sunrise Viewpoint (Ong Dien Mountain Foothills)
Bai Thom's north-east-facing shoreline is one of the very few places in Vietnam where you watch the sun rise directly over Cambodia — the silhouettes of Rabbit Island and Kampot's hills glow amber against the Gulf of Thailand, and you'll almost certainly have the view entirely to yourself.
The View Across the Gulf
Standing on Thom Beach at first light, you can pick out Cambodia's Rabbit Island (Koh Tonsay), the hills of Kampot Province and the low skyline of Kep across the water — an international panorama that feels wildly out of proportion to the effort required to reach it. The beach faces north-east, so the sun clears the Cambodian hills and floods the Gulf with gold in a matter of minutes.
The sight of the sun rising from behind Cambodia is genuinely captivating and changes character quickly — the first ten minutes after sunrise are the most dramatic, with the water shifting from deep violet through orange to bright turquoise as the light builds.
Sunset From the Village Side
While the beach faces east for sunrise, the hills of Ong Dien Mountain (at the foot of which Bai Thom sits) catch spectacular evening light from the west, painting the forest canopy in warm amber. Walk up the village's main track towards the treeline around 5:30 PM for a different, quieter perspective.
There are no dedicated viewing platforms or tourist infrastructure here — which is precisely the point. Bring a flask of Vietnamese drip coffee, find a flat rock on the shoreline, and watch the sky do its work.
