Schrammsteine Ridge Trail

While the Bastei draws the crowds, the Schrammsteine — a 3 km-long serrated ridge of sandstone needles rising directly behind Bad Schandau — rewards those willing to climb iron rungs and squeeze through narrow rock slots with a wilder, more intimate version of the same landscape. This is the trail that locals actually walk on weekends.

Getting onto the Ridge

The most direct approach leaves Bad Schandau via the Personenaufzug (the town's historic cliff elevator, built in 1905 and still running) which lifts you 50 metres up the sandstone escarpment to the Ostrauer Scheibe plateau — a €2.50 ride that immediately saves 20 minutes of steep climbing.

From the plateau, a well-marked trail leads east for about 3 km to the Schrammsteinaussicht, the main viewpoint on the ridge, passing through pine and birch forest before the rock scrambling begins.

The Ridge Experience

The final ascent to the Schrammsteinaussicht involves iron Klettersteig (via ferrata) rungs bolted into the sandstone — no specialist equipment is needed, but a head for heights is essential. The exposed summit platform at 417 metres delivers a 360-degree panorama over the Elbe valley, the Bastei in the distance, and the Czech Bohemian Switzerland just across the border.

A longer loop continues along the ridge to the Großer Winterberg and the Zeughaus, a natural sandstone amphitheatre used as a rock shelter by Hussite soldiers in the 15th century — the inscriptions they left on the walls are still visible.

Practical Scrambling Notes

The trail is rated as a moderate hike with short easy via ferrata sections; sturdy hiking boots with ankle support are strongly recommended as the sandstone can be slippery after rain.

The Bad Schandau Personenaufzug operates daily 8 am to 8 pm in summer (reduced hours in winter), making a car-free ascent from the town centre entirely practical — the full loop back via the Kirnitzschtal valley makes a superb 15 km day.
