Bastei Rock Formation & Bridge
Rising 194 metres above the River Elbe, the Bastei is Saxon Switzerland's most iconic silhouette — a jagged crown of sandstone pillars that has been drawing romantics since Caspar David Friedrich put it on canvas in the 1820s. The 76-metre-long Basteibrücke, a stone arch bridge completed in 1851, connects the pinnacles and delivers a view that genuinely stops conversation.
The Walk Up
From Bad Schandau's Kurpark you can follow the signed Malerweg (Painters' Way) trail north-east through beech forest for roughly 7 km, gaining altitude gradually before the rocks appear dramatically through the canopy.
A shorter option is to drive or take the bus to the Bastei car park and walk the paved 1.5 km path to the bridge — manageable for most fitness levels and rewarding within 20 minutes of leaving your car.
What to See at the Top
The Felsenburg Neurathen, a medieval rock castle built directly into the sandstone, sits just beside the bridge and is the largest preserved rock castle in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains — entry costs only €2 and the labyrinthine passages are genuinely atmospheric.
Sunrise and the golden hour before sunset are the magic windows: the warm light turns the sandstone amber, mist sometimes fills the Elbe valley below, and the crowds thin out noticeably compared to mid-morning.
Practical Tips
The viewpoint is inside the Sächsische Schweiz National Park, which charges no entry fee. The on-site Hotel Berghotel Bastei has a terrace restaurant where you can eat Sächsische Sauerbraten with the panorama as a backdrop.
Weekends in July and August are extremely busy; aim for a Tuesday or Wednesday arrival before 9 am for an almost solitary experience on the bridge.
