Kirnitzschtal Valley & Lichtenhainer Waterfall

The Kirnitzsch river carves a narrow, forested gorge east of Bad Schandau that feels like a secret even though a vintage electric tram has been running along it since 1898. Follow the valley to the Lichtenhainer Wasserfall, the most visited waterfall in Saxon Switzerland, and you have a half-day of effortless, beautiful hiking.

The Historic Kirnitzschtalbahn

The Kirnitzschtalbahn tram departs from Bad Schandau's Kurpark terminus and rattles 8 km up the valley, stopping at trailheads and the Lichtenhainer Wasserfall terminus — a single ticket costs around €3.50 and the open-sided summer cars are a joy.

The tram runs from April to October (and on selected winter weekends), making it the most charming way to access the upper valley trails without a car.

The Waterfall and Beyond

The Lichtenhainer Wasserfall tumbles about 6 metres over a sandstone ledge into a mossy basin — modest by Alpine standards but framed by ancient spruce and beech in a way that feels genuinely primordial. A wooden viewing platform puts you right beside the cascade.

From the waterfall you can continue on foot to the Kuhstall, a giant natural sandstone arch 11 metres high and 17 metres wide, adding roughly 3 km to your walk through increasingly dramatic rock scenery.

Wildlife and Seasons

The valley is a stronghold for kingfishers, dippers and the elusive black stork; early morning walkers in May and June have the best chance of spotting all three along the Kirnitzsch stream.

Autumn is arguably the most beautiful season here: the beech trees turn copper and gold against the grey sandstone walls, and the tram is far less crowded than in peak summer.
