Torre del Agua (Azul Water Tower Viewpoint)
Azul's early-20th-century water tower has been converted into a free public viewpoint, and on a clear day the 360-degree view over the flat Pampas horizon is genuinely humbling — the kind of perspective that makes you understand why this landscape inspired so much Argentine literature. Almost no tourists know it exists.
The View and the Architecture
Climb the restored internal staircase and you emerge onto a narrow observation terrace that looks out over terracotta rooftops, the silver thread of the Arroyo Azul and then — nothing but open grassland stretching to every horizon. The flatness is the spectacle: the Pampas sky here is enormous, and at sunset it turns shades of orange and violet that feel almost theatrical.
The tower itself is a handsome piece of Italianate industrial architecture, built in 1908 with locally fired brick and decorative ironwork at the balustrade. Even if you don't climb, it photographs beautifully from street level against a blue sky.
When to Go
Sunset is the obvious answer — arrive 30 minutes before to claim a spot on the terrace and watch the light change over the Pampas in slow motion. Bring a light jacket because the wind at the top is brisk even on warm evenings.
Early morning is the secret option: the tower opens at 09:00 and on weekday mornings you will almost certainly have the terrace to yourself, with the low eastern light throwing long shadows across the grid of streets below.
