Momella Lakes, Arusha National Park
Just 35 km from the city, the seven alkaline Momella Lakes inside Arusha National Park are among East Africa's most quietly spectacular wildlife scenes — each lake tinted a different shade of jade or cobalt by its unique mineral content, and fringed by thousands of flamingos turning the shoreline pink. It is a full safari in miniature, without the crowds of the Serengeti.
A Rainbow of Crater Lakes
The seven lakes sit in the northeastern corner of Arusha National Park, each fed by different underground springs, which is why neighbouring lakes can look entirely different colours. Giraffes, zebras, and waterbucks graze the surrounding bush, while hippos wallow in the deeper sections — the whole scene framed by the green cone of Mount Meru rising behind.
Over 400 bird species have been recorded across the Momella area, making it one of the most rewarding birding spots in Tanzania without needing to travel deep into the bush. Mornings, when the light is low and the animals are active, are when the lakes are at their most magical.
Getting Out on the Water
A canoe safari on the Momella Lakes lets you drift silently among flamingos and Egyptian geese, close enough to hear their calls and watch the giraffes on the bank without the rumble of a Land Cruiser engine. It is one of the calmest, most intimate wildlife experiences available near Arusha.
The park also offers guided walking safaris accompanied by an armed ranger — a rarity in Tanzanian parks — which lets you experience the bush at foot level, reading tracks and listening to the forest in a way that no game drive can replicate.
