Cultural Heritage Centre, Dodoma Road

The Cultural Heritage Centre on Dodoma Road is far more than a souvenir shop — it is East Africa's most ambitious single collection of contemporary and traditional African art, housed across two sweeping gallery floors, with on-site craft workshops, the Jane Goodall Museum, and an African Ceremonies Museum all under one roof. Plan at least two hours.

A Gallery That Earns Its Name

Spanning two expansive floors, the gallery holds over 1,000 original works — bold Tingatinga canvases, intricate Makonde carvings, mixed-media sculptures, and fine prints by established and emerging artists from across the continent. The curation is genuinely thoughtful, tracing the full arc of African artistic expression from village craft traditions to avant-garde installation.

The on-site Jane Goodall Museum and African Ceremonies Museum add depth that most travellers do not expect: the former traces Goodall's decades of chimpanzee research in Tanzania, while the latter documents the ritual life of northern Tanzania's tribes through artefacts, photographs, and film.

Workshops, Markets & the Jewellery World

Weekend visitors can join hands-on workshops in Maasai beading, basket weaving, and painting, all led by skilled makers who are happy to share technique and story in equal measure. The craft market attached to the gallery carries high-quality, authentically sourced pieces at fixed prices — a relief after the Maasai Market's bargaining marathon.

The Jewellery World section specialises in tanzanite, the violet-blue gemstone found only in the hills near Kilimanjaro, with certified stones and knowledgeable staff who can explain the gem's geology and grading. Even if you are not buying, the display cases alone are worth the detour.
