Plage Lafayette (Lafayette Beach)
Just a ten-minute walk from the Tahiti Pearl Beach Resort, Plage Lafayette is Arue's own stretch of dark volcanic sand — calm, local, and utterly unpretentious, with the kind of turquoise water and Moorea backdrop that belongs on a postcard.
Arue's Neighbourhood Beach
Unlike the more visited black-sand beaches near Pointe Vénus, Lafayette sits squarely in the residential heart of Arue and draws mostly locals — families on weekends, fishermen in the early morning, and the occasional savvy traveller who has done their research. The volcanic sand is dark and fine, the water calm inside the reef, and the whole scene is wonderfully free of tourist infrastructure.
The beach faces northwest, which means late-afternoon light turns the lagoon a luminous gold and the outline of Mo'orea sharpens on the horizon as the sun drops. It is one of the best free sunset spots in the Arue–Papeete corridor.
How to Make a Day of It
The beach is shallow and gentle enough for swimming, and the reef just offshore makes for decent snorkelling with a mask and fins. Arrive early on a weekday and you may share the water only with outrigger paddlers training in the bay.
A handful of roulottes — Tahiti's beloved mobile food vans — park near the beach on weekend evenings, serving poisson cru (raw tuna marinated in lime and coconut milk), chow mein, and grilled fish at prices that will make you very happy. This is the real local food experience, no reservation required.
