Maison James Norman Hall (James Norman Hall Museum)
The co-author of Mutiny on the Bounty arrived in Tahiti in the 1920s, fell irreversibly in love, and built his dream home in Arue — where he stayed until his death in 1951. That house, rebuilt in 2002 and now a classified historic monument, is one of the most charming and least-crowded museums in all of French Polynesia.
A Writer's Paradise Preserved
James Norman Hall co-authored The Bounty Trilogy and The Hurricane with Charles Nordhoff, and it was the royalties from those books that allowed him to buy this stretch of Tahitian land and build his home on it. The museum preserves his personal world: original manuscripts, furniture, books, and the intimate atmosphere of a man who chose Tahiti over everything else.
Hall married local woman Sarah Teraireia Winchester and raised his family here. The house was purchased by the French Polynesian government in 1991, classified as a historic monument in 1993, and carefully rebuilt by Hall's descendants and the government in 2002. It sits at PK 5.4 on the mountainside in Arue, a short drive from Papeete.
Gardens, Breadfruit and Literary Ghosts
The gardens surrounding the house are as much a draw as the interior. Don't miss the breadfruit trees planted on the grounds — a nod to Captain Bligh's original mission to Tahiti to collect breadfruit cuttings for transplantation in the West Indies, the very voyage that inspired Mutiny on the Bounty.
The museum is small, personal and wonderfully unhurried. Weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit; guided tours are occasionally available and add rich context to the artefacts inside. Allow at least 90 minutes to do the house and gardens justice.
