Marché d'Arras – Grand'Place Saturday Market
Every Saturday morning Grand'Place transforms into one of the liveliest open-air markets in northern France, with more than 100 stalls spilling across the cobblestones under the gabled arcades. Locals from across the Pas-de-Calais drive in for the cheese, andouillette, maroilles and farm-fresh vegetables — this is the real weekly heartbeat of the city.
What to Buy
The cheese stalls are the undisputed stars: look for Vieux-Lille (pungent, orange-rinded), maroilles (softer, washed-rind) and mimolette in its dusty cannon-ball form. Pair them with a loaf from the boulangerie stalls selling pain d'épeautre and ficelles.
Charcuterie vendors offer andouillette de Cambrai, smoked hams and rillettes; a few stalls specialise in locally grown chicory (endive), the region's most underrated vegetable, sold in tight, pale torpedoes.
Eating & Timing Tips
Grab a hot gaufre de Bruxelles (Brussels-style waffle) from one of the street vendors and eat it while wandering the arcades — it costs around €2 and is the definitive Arras market snack. Several café terraces on the square open early specifically for market-goers.
Arrive by 8:30 am for the best choice and the most atmospheric light; stalls begin packing up around 1 pm. A smaller Wednesday morning market also runs on Place des Héros if you miss Saturday.
