Riviera di Levante Clifftop Walk

The eastern headland of Anzio offers a clifftop promenade with unobstructed views across the Tyrrhenian Sea towards the Pontine Islands and, on clear winter days, as far as Circeo and the mountains of Calabria. It is completely free, rarely busy, and delivers the kind of horizon that recalibrates your sense of scale.

The Walk Itself

The path runs roughly 2 km from the eastern end of the Riviera Mallozzi beach northward along the cliff edge, passing stone benches, parasol pines, and the occasional crumbling WWII bunker half-buried in the scrub. The surface is well-maintained gravel and suitable for light trainers.

At the northern end the path meets a small belvedere terrace where local fishermen sometimes sit mending nets in the afternoon sun. The view from here takes in the full arc of the bay, with the white lighthouse of Anzio Porto visible to the west.

Best Times & Light

Sunset from the belvedere is reliably spectacular between April and October, when the light goes gold-orange and the Pontine Islands appear as dark silhouettes on the horizon. Bring a jacket even in summer — the sea breeze picks up after 18:00.

Winter mornings after a tramontane wind are when visibility is at its absolute peak. The air is crystal-clear and the mountain profiles on the southern horizon appear close enough to touch.

Combining the Walk

The walk begins near the Grotte di Nerone restaurant, making it easy to combine with a seafood lunch before setting out. The return leg back along the lower beach path adds variety and keeps the circuit to under an hour.
