Mercato di Anzio (Piazza Garibaldi Weekly Market)
Every Tuesday and Friday morning, Piazza Garibaldi and the surrounding streets fill with stalls selling the kind of produce that reminds you why Italian cooking is so effortlessly good. This is where Anzio's fishing families, smallholders from the Castelli Romani hills, and home cooks all converge before noon.
What to Buy
The fish section is the undisputed star. Anzio has one of the most active small fishing fleets on the Lazio coast, so the swordfish, sea bream, cuttlefish, and clams on display were almost certainly in the sea the previous night. Vendors will tell you exactly which boat caught what.
Beyond the fish, look for ricotta from the Pontine plain, wild strawberries from Nemi in late spring, and the small, intensely sweet Gaeta olives that are pressed into oil just up the coast.
How to Shop Like a Local
Arrive before 09:00 for the best selection and the most energetic atmosphere. By 11:30 the fishmongers are packing up and the choice narrows quickly.
Bring cash — most stalls are card-free — and a reusable bag. Vendors appreciate a buongiorno and a genuine attempt at Italian far more than a translation app.
