The Allied landings at Anzio in January 1944 — Operation Shingle — shaped the entire Italian Campaign, and this compact, well-curated museum tells that story with rare personal artefacts, original maps, and genuine emotional weight. It is one of the most honest and moving WWII museums in Italy.
What You Will Find Inside
The collection spans uniforms, weapons, dog tags, letters home, and detailed dioramas of the beachhead perimeter. A large relief map of the Anzio-Nettuno front line anchors the central room and immediately makes the tactical nightmare of the four-month stalemate viscerally clear.
Particularly affecting is the section dedicated to the civilian population of Anzio, most of whom fled inland but left behind photographs and household objects now displayed in glass cases alongside the military hardware.
The Wider Memorial Landscape
The museum is best treated as a starting point for a broader circuit. The Sicily-Rome American Cemetery at Nettuno, just 3 km away, contains 7,861 white marble crosses and Stars of David set in immaculate lawns — one of the most serene and sobering places in central Italy.
The British and Commonwealth War Cemetery on Via Nettunense is smaller but equally moving, and its rose garden is in bloom from May through October.
