Quieter than Juhu, wilder than Marine Drive, Versova Beach in Andheri West is where the Arabian Sea meets a living Koli fishing village — and where one of the world's most remarkable community clean-up stories unfolded. A Beach With a Story Worth Knowing
Versova Beach was once notoriously filthy, but a grassroots clean-up drive launched in 2016 transformed it so dramatically that the United Nations recognised it as the world's largest beach clean-up project. The effort paid off spectacularly: endangered Olive Ridley turtles returned to nest on the shore for the first time in 20 years.
Today the beach is one of the cleanest in Mumbai, with a tranquil atmosphere that stands in sharp contrast to the chaos of Juhu just across the creek. The shoreline features white and black dry sand with a few rocky outcroppings — photogenic at any hour but especially beautiful at dusk.
The adjacent Koli fishing village is the soul of the place. The original inhabitants of Mumbai, the Kolis still practise their traditional occupation here, and daily fish auctions are held on the beach — a loud, fragrant, utterly authentic slice of the city's pre-Bollywood identity.
Things to Do and See
Early mornings are magical: fishermen wade into the Arabian Sea with nets while the rest of Mumbai sleeps, and the catch is hauled in and auctioned within metres of where you're standing. You can buy fresh fish directly from the market stalls along the village lane.
The beach also offers water sports including surfing and snorkelling for those who want more than a sunset stroll. Kite-flying and beach volleyball are popular with locals on weekend afternoons.
A string of seafood shacks and bhel puri carts lines the approach road — Versova's grilled pomfret and prawn masala are local legends. Pair a meal here with a walk along the Versova-Madh Island ferry jetty for an unbeatable golden-hour panorama.
