Mahakali Caves (Kondivite Caves)

Tucked into a basalt hillside in Andheri East, the Mahakali Caves are one of Mumbai's most astonishing and least-visited ancient sites — a complex of 19 rock-cut Buddhist monasteries carved between the 1st century BCE and the 6th century CE. Step off the busy Andheri Kurla Road and into a world of sculpted stone, moss-covered chambers and centuries of silence.

Carved by Monks, Forgotten by Tourists

The Mahakali Caves — also known as the Kondivite Caves — bear witness to Mumbai's ancient history as a hub of Buddhist pilgrimage. Believed to have served as monastic retreats, they were once active centres of spiritual activity and meditation, with monks living, praying and debating philosophy inside these cool basalt chambers.

The complex is divided into two groups: a larger eastern cluster of 15 caves and a smaller western cluster of 4. Cave 9, the oldest, contains a circular Chaitya Gruh (prayer hall) with sculptural reliefs of Buddha and Bodhisattva deities. Cave 4 famously houses a carving of a seven-headed serpent.

The site also contains 22 rock-cut water cisterns — ingeniously carved reservoirs that supplied the monastic community for centuries and still hold water today, now used to maintain the surrounding gardens.

Planning Your Visit

The caves sit on a hill that overlooks the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road and the SEEPZ area, giving the approach a pleasantly incongruous quality: you wind up a quiet lane and suddenly ancient India appears between the office towers.

Arrive early — the site is rarely crowded before 10 AM on weekdays — and give yourself at least 90 minutes to wander between the two cave groups, read the Pali-language inscriptions and let your eyes adjust to the dim interiors.

A BEST bus (routes 333 or 410) connects Mahakali Caves Road directly to Andheri Station, or take Metro Line 1 to Aarey JVLR station and a short auto-rickshaw ride.
