Souq Al-Bukhariyyeh & Downtown Gold Souk
Tucked into the dense alleyways of Al-Balad, Amman's oldest commercial district, the downtown souqs are a sensory overload in the best possible way. Sacks of za'atar, ropes of amber beads and glittering 21-karat bangles compete for your attention within a few hundred metres.
Navigating the Lanes
The Gold Souk on King Talal Street is a serious trading hub, not a tourist trap — prices are set by daily gold rates, and shopkeepers will show you the calculation on a calculator. Even if you are not buying, watching the craft of a goldsmith shaping a ring in a tiny workshop is worth the detour.
Nearby, the spice market around Al-Hashimi Street piles cardamom, dried rose buds, sumac and Jordanian sage into vivid mounds. Vendors are happy to let you smell everything; pick up a bag of the local wild thyme blend for a fraction of what it costs abroad.
Street Snacks Between Stalls
The souq area is the best place in Amman to eat on your feet. Grab a kaak — a sesame-crusted bread ring — from a cart vendor and pair it with a cup of sweet mint tea handed through a hatch by a tea seller who has probably been in the same spot for 30 years.
For a sit-down moment, duck into one of the old coffee houses on Al-Malek Faisal Street where backgammon boards clatter and the coffee is cardamom-heavy and poured into tiny handle-less cups.
