Rainbow Street Balcony & Jabal Amman Ridge

Rainbow Street, the beating heart of Jabal Amman's First Circle neighbourhood, curves along a ridge that drops sharply into the valley below, offering unobstructed views of the city's rolling hills at virtually every turn. Come at dusk when the limestone buildings blush pink and the call to prayer echoes across seven hills simultaneously.

The Street Itself

The stretch of Rainbow Street between First Circle and the steps down to Al-Balad is lined with independent cafés, bookshops and art galleries housed in 1940s and 50s Jordanian villas. The architecture alone — arched windows, wrought-iron balconies, jasmine climbing the walls — justifies a slow afternoon stroll.

Several cafés place tables right on the ridge wall so you are essentially sitting above a sheer drop to the valley. Books@Cafe, one of Amman's oldest cultural hangouts, has a terrace that frames a perfect panorama and serves good Arabic coffee alongside international titles.

First Circle & Beyond

Walk five minutes uphill from Rainbow Street to reach First Circle itself, a leafy roundabout surrounded by early 20th-century embassies and mansions. The Duke's Diwan, a restored 1924 Ottoman-era building, is open to visitors and gives context to how Amman's elite lived a century ago.

For the most dramatic viewpoint with no café crowds, take the stone staircase (known locally as the 'Salalem') that connects Rainbow Street down to the Hashem Restaurant area of downtown — the mid-point landing gives you a straight-line view of the Roman Theatre and Citadel simultaneously.
