Villa Cimbrone Terrazza dell'Infinito, Ravello

Perched 350 metres above the sea on Ravello's clifftop, the Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone delivers what may be the most photographed panorama on the entire Amalfi Coast. Marble busts line the balustrade as the coastline dissolves into a shimmering blue horizon that genuinely earns the name.

The View That Stopped Gore Vidal

Writer Gore Vidal called Ravello the place closest to heaven he had ever found, and the Terrazza dell'Infinito is the exact spot he meant. On a clear morning the eye travels from Capo d'Orso all the way to the Cilento headlands, with the sea glittering far below like hammered silver.

The garden itself is a 13th-century estate reimagined by an English aristocrat, Lord William Beckett, in the early 1900s. Wisteria-draped pergolas, rose alleys and classical statuary make the walk to the terrace feel like a slow build toward a grand reveal.

Making the Most of Your Visit

Arrive at opening time (09:00) on a weekday to have the terrace almost to yourself — by mid-morning tour groups from Amalfi and Positano begin arriving. The soft golden light of early morning also makes the sea colour far richer for photography.

Ravello sits a steep 6 km above Amalfi town; the SITA Sud bus runs regularly and drops you at Piazza Duomo, from where Villa Cimbrone is a pleasant 10-minute walk through the medieval lanes. Comfortable shoes are essential on the cobblestones.
