Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods), Nocelle to Bomerano

The Sentiero degli Dei is a 7.8 km cliff-side trail that traverses the mountain ridge above Positano at around 600 metres elevation, offering a continuous panorama of the entire Amalfi Coast that no road, boat or cable car can match. The path links the hamlet of Nocelle (above Positano) to Bomerano in the Agerola plateau, and on a clear day you can see Capri, the Faraglioni and the curve of the Ba

The Route and the Views

The classic direction is east to west: take the SITA Sud bus from Amalfi or Positano to Bomerano (Agerola), walk to Nocelle, then descend 1,700 steps to Positano's upper village of Montepertuso and catch a local bus or taxi back to the seafront. This way the sea views are in front of you the entire time rather than at your back.

The terrain alternates between open limestone ridges with vertiginous drops, shaded chestnut woods and terraced lemon groves clinging to the cliff edge. The most dramatic section is the central ridge above the village of Arienzo, where the path narrows to a ledge and the sea appears 600 metres directly below.

Practical Tips for a Great Day

Start before 08:00 in summer to beat the heat on the exposed ridge sections — by 11:00 the limestone reflects serious heat and there is no shade for long stretches. Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person; the only reliable water source is a spring near Nocelle at the western end.

The trail is rated moderate: the main challenge is the 1,700-step descent into Positano, which is hard on the knees. Trekking poles are worth packing. The path is waymarked with red-and-white CAI blazes but a downloaded offline map (Maps.me or AllTrails) adds confidence on the few ambiguous junctions.
