Sandboarding the Dunes Above Iquique
The giant sand dunes that tumble down the escarpment between Alto Hospicio and Iquique are among the most dramatic in South America — and they are wide open for sandboarding. Strap a board to your feet at the top and the Pacific Ocean appears at the bottom of your run, glittering like a reward.
The Dune That Swallowed a City
Cerro Dragón — the Dragon Dune — is the world's largest urban sand dune, rising directly from the edge of Iquique and visible from the Alto Hospicio mirador. The dunes and sandy slopes of the Alto Hospicio escarpment feed into this system, creating a continuous ribbon of rideable sand from the pampa plateau to the coastal city below.
Sandboarding here is raw and unhurried compared to more commercialised desert destinations. Local operators offer boards for hire and brief instruction, then leave you to find your own line down the slope — exhilarating for beginners and endlessly replayable for those who want steeper pitches.
Practical Adventure
The best dune access points sit on the Alto Hospicio side of the escarpment, reachable in minutes from the city centre. Operators also run cycling and hiking circuits through the surrounding hills, combining sandboarding with a broader exploration of the pampa landscape.
Go in the late afternoon: the sand is cooler, the light is extraordinary, and you finish your last run with a front-row sunset over the Pacific. Bring goggles or sunglasses — wind picks up on the exposed ridge and fine Atacama sand is relentless.
